Recorded between 1931 and 1978, the set spans Campoli's 47-year career, from shellac to stereo. From his own serenades with the Salon Orchestra and Baroque sonatas to the first recording of a concerto written for him by Sir Arthur Bliss, Campoli's musical talents are extensively captured. His recording of Elgar's Violin Concerto under Sir Adrian Boult in 1954 brings a special warmth and unconventional melancholy that makes it stand out among Campoli's recordings. He continued to record for Decca in the LP and stereo era, and his skills have not diminished.Returning to the studio at age 73 to record a Wieniawski album for the Ouazolier label, he once again returns to the popular repertoire that made his name famous as a virtuoso. The set includes Campoli's recordings, arranged in roughly chronological order and restored from the original LPs: six and a half hours of recordings made at 78 rpm, mastered by Mark Obert-Sohn, and released on CD for the first time (CDs 1-4). Stereo versions of Saint-Saens' Violin Concerto No. 3, Sarasate's "Zigoinelwaizen," Wieniawski's "Legend," and the Kreisler/Paganini "Concerto in One Movement" are also available on CD for the first time. Beethoven (with Joseph Klips), Bruch (Royalton Kisch, with Sir Adrian Boult), Mendelssohn (Eduard van Beinum, with Sir Adrian Boult), Saint-Saëns (Anatole Fistulari, with Piero Gamba) and others, as well as concertos, concerto works, salon orchestras, trios, and encores with George Malcolm, Daphne Ibbott, and Eric Gritton.Born in Rome in 1906 to a musical family, Alfredo Campoli studied violin from an early age and had already mastered 11 major concertos by the age of 18. In the 1930s he formed his own salon orchestra and rose to fame through recordings and broadcasts. The booklet features rare photographs and an essay by Andrew Dalton and Mark Obert-Sohn. Newly remastered from the original tapes. In original jacket. Andrew Dalton's essay reminds us of Campoli in concert in the early 1960s. He writes, "I was immediately taken with Campoli's performance because it was totally unconventional."Campoli's strong personality, sentimental tone, and technical seductions...seem to fit perfectly into the salon repertoire...No wonder most violinists, including some of the most famous, have gotten something out of listening to Campoli." --Fanfare magazine (July 2018) Universal Music/IMS

Alfredo Campoli Collection List
