Hungarian conductor Antal Dorati became music director of the Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra in 1949, and quickly built it into a world-class orchestra. Mercury continued to record with the orchestra from 1952 until Dorati's resignation in 1960, producing 51 albums (24 in mono and 27 in stereo). There is a legacy of what he built with the orchestra during his 11 years as music director. Newly remastered from original sources by chief engineer Robert Fine, who worked with Mercury for many years, and Thomas Fine, son of producer Wilma Cozart. The program opens with Stravinsky's intense \"Firebird\" and ends with two Hungarian works from the same period, the incomparably talented Kodaly's \"Peacock\" Variations and Bartok's sensational \"The Wonderful Chinese Official.\" Also of note are three Tchaikovsky ballets by acclaimed ballet conductor Dorati. The legendary grand overture \"1812\" is included in its original version with a \"making of\" narration by Deems Taylor.
