He was rarely allowed to perform outside the Soviet Union. After perestroika, he began to perform internationally and gained fame. He has made very few recordings (he hates recordings) because of his cautious approach to his work. He is the last great pianist who is praised by those who know him as \"the best pianist alive. This is his first CD release since he gave permission for his last CD recording about 20 years ago, and now that he has signed an exclusive contract with DG, one wonders what kind of recordings he will make in the future.
