The first, \"Winter Song I,\" was a darker piece with bass instruments, lots of noise, and electronics, partly because a good friend of the composer was killed in a car accident while composing it. Eventually, Chernovin recognized that \"Winter Song I\" was a very concentrated layer of a larger work, which she continued to compose intermittently as a series.
