Known for his sharp assertiveness and highly individualistic playing, Mustonen's characteristics are on full display, creating a multilayered sound with clear intensity and tonal differences in each note, bringing out the sharpness, speed, and vividness of the works. CDs 3 and 4 contain 12 preludes and fugues from Bach's \"The First Book of the Mean Law\" and Shostakovich's \"24 Preludes and Fugues,\" respectively, and are combined in ascending semitone steps from C major to B minor. This strong contrast reveals a great Western musical tradition that has lived on in the 200 years separating Bach and Shostakovich.
