Performed by Herbert Blomstedt (1927-), the oldest living conductor, and the Vienna Philharmonic, the program includes Honegger's Symphony No. 3 and Brahms' Symphony No. 4. Blomstedt will perform this program in the 2020\/21 season (although unfortunately it was cancelled with the NHK Symphony Orchestra), and his July 2020 concert with the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra was a great success after a long absence from the stage after the lockdown, so expectations are high for his performance with the Vienna Philharmonic. The performance with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra is also highly anticipated. Blomstedt's history with the Vienna Philharmonic is surprisingly short, having first appeared at the Vienna Mozart Week on January 26, 2011 as a substitute for Arnoncourt. In 2019, the Vienna Philharmonic is honoring Blomstedt with the title of Honorary Member in recognition of his great musical achievements to date. Arthur Honegger is one of the French Six.The Third Symphony \"Liturgical Style\" was composed between 1945 and 1946, after the end of World War II, and was premiered by Charles Munch. It consists of three movements, each with a title taken from a Mass or Psalm: \"The Day of Wrath,\" \"From the Depths,\" and \"Peace to Us. The work expresses anger at the barbarism of war and a prayer for peace. The program is very meaningful, as it can be compared to the situation at the time of composition, the pandemic since 2020, and the current world situation. The Fourth Symphony is one of Blomstedt's best-known works, and the Vienna Philharmonic's performance of it is a perfect example of the composer's ability to capture the essence of Brahms's music. The beauty of the Vienna Philharmonic's clean, extended strings and stable woodwind is exquisite. The finale, based on the Chaconne from Bach's Cantata No. 150, was performed with a strong conducting and tempo that one would not expect from the 94-year-old, and the tension was maintained until the very end.
