World Premiere of Female Composer Olga Neuville's New Opera \"Orlando\" Costume Design by Rei Kawakubo of Comme des GarconsThe Vienna State Opera will celebrate its 150th anniversary in 2019. In its long history, the opera house has never performed a work by a female composer. On December 8, 2019, the world premiere of \"Orlando,\" an opera commissioned from the Austrian contemporary music composer Olga Neuwirth, was held to commemorate the theater's 150th anniversary. Orlando is based on the 1928 novel Orlando: A Biography by English novelist Virginia Woolf. In the original story, Orlando, a young nobleman born in England under the reign of Queen Elizabeth I, is transformed into a woman after waking up from a seven-day coma. The story spans three centuries as she establishes herself as a female literary figure and experiences marriage and childbirth. Virginia Woolf is considered one of the leading writers of modernist literature in England and a pioneer of the women's rights movement. The original work is dedicated to the English poet, writer, and horticulturist Vita Sackville-West (who was also a close friend and lover of Woolf), and is said to be a semi-autobiographical novel based on their relationship. This production was notable not only for the author, Virginia Woolf, and the composer, Neuwirth, but also for the fact that the play was written, directed, and costumed entirely by women. The screenplay was written by French-American playwright Catherine Filloux. The costumes were by Rei Kawakubo of Comme des Garcons. An enthusiastic offer was made by Neuwirth, and a total of 142 stylish and innovative costume designs were used, based on historical backgrounds from the Elizabethan era to the 20th century, breaking with classical styles. Orlando in the title role is Kate Lindsey, an American mezzo-soprano. Conductor is Matthias Pincher, music director of Ensemble Intercontemporain.
