Schnittke's Cello Sonata is a very heavy and dark work reminiscent of Shostakovich's, expressing feelings of anxiety and anger. Prokofiev's Symphonic Concerto for cello and orchestra is an adaptation of his Cello Concerto No. 1, Op. 58.
