He also possessed remarkable talent as a song composer. He published his first song in his twenties. Although the songs written as Op. 6 were set to Italian poetry, the pieces included on this album date from a slightly later period and feature carefully selected texts set to truly well-thought-out music. While the forms themselves are relatively simple, the beauty of the melodies is simply breathtaking. Schöne’s deep baritone brings out the best in these songs.
