Now, for the first time ever, *Parsifal*, which Kempe conducted at Covent Garden in 1959—the same year as the previous *Ring* cycle—is being released. This is a live recording of an overwhelming masterpiece that reveals the true value of *Parsifal*, an opera that stands head and shoulders above the rest of Wagner’s works, under the baton of Kempe, who enjoyed the absolute trust of London audiences, singers, and orchestra members alike. Please take your time to savor the truly exceptional ensemble performance of the singers and orchestra, brought to life under Kempe’s unadorned conducting.

■ Excerpt from the liner notes
Wagner’s final opera, *Parsifal*, was staged at Covent Garden for the first time after World War II under the baton of Music Director Karl Runkel, with Kirsten Flagstad as Kundry, Ludwig Weber as Gurnemanz, and a cast of renowned singers—though not all were perfectly cast for their roles—and was revived in 1951 using the same stage sets as the opera’s 1914 premiere at this venue. It is worth noting that while a 1928 recording of Act 3 by the great “Parsifal” conductor Karl Muck survives, no complete recording of the work was made in the late 1940s. Nevertheless, setting it apart from Wagner’s other works—which were often described as grandiose, fanatical, and particularly slow—*Parsifal* continued to enjoy high acclaim. A magnificent 1951 recording, conducted by Hans Knappertsbusch—the successor to Muck, who was the preeminent authority on *Parsifal*—at the Bayreuth Festival, which resumed after the war, was released by DECCA in 1952. (Knappertsbusch conducted at Bayreuth 55 times between 1951 and 1964, the year before his death.) That 1951 recording is magnificent and deeply moving; one reason for this is that the DECCA recording team perfectly captured the overwhelming splendor of the acoustics at the Bayreuth Festival Theatre. ...[omitted]... In the 1950s, the “New Bayreuth” style of staging was becoming increasingly prevalent in Wagner productions at Covent Garden, and this “Parsifal” was considerably more radical than previous productions. Critical reception was mixed; while the majority of reviews argued that Walter, the stage director, had tried to avoid naturalism in this production but failed to find a satisfactory alternative—thus chasing two rabbits and catching neither—there were also reviews that supported his ideas. A reviewer for the Daily Mail wrote, “The trees in the forest in Act III looked like the piers of Hungerford Bridge,” and other writers similarly cited a wide range of metaphors. While reviews of the music were mixed, the majority were generally favorable. This was Kempe’s first “Parsifal,” and he staged revivals in 1960 and 1966.
Universal Music/IMS

Tracklisting:

1.
