However, during the last few days of the tour, a recording and live streaming of the John Passion was made in Cologne. The recording was made in a session in the main hall of the Cologne Philharmonic. This recording, made possible under difficult circumstances, is the most remarkable release of the BCJ in 2020. Coincidentally, the BCJ celebrated its 30th anniversary, and this is a recording in which the BCJ gave its all. In addition to the superb performances, it is also noteworthy that the recordings were made by the renowned recording engineer Martin Sauer. The CD recording session took place a day or two before and after the live streaming, in a very tense atmosphere as European countries closed their borders one after another and flights were cancelled one after another.The hotel's cafes and restaurants gradually began to close their doors, and on the last day, a police officer finally showed up at the hall and demanded that we immediately vacate and close the building. Fortunately, however, the police officer also understood our activities because he had heard BCJ's performance, and we were finally able to finish the recording because he gave us an hour's grace. Ironically, I must say that the John Passion is truly an appropriate Passion to perform in such a tense atmosphere. This music, which reflects the tense story of the arrest and execution of Jesus Christ far more dramatically than the Matthew Passion, seems to force us to rethink the meaning of life in this world at the time of the great suffering we have experienced.
