Although his friend, the composer Thomas de Hartmann, composed music from his single-finger compositions, a vast number of his compositions remain, and some of them have a cult-like following. His works are all unique, incorporating elements of folk music he came into contact with in Central Asia, Afghanistan, and Tibet during his wanderings, and his sensibility ahead of its time is astonishing. There are several recordings, including one by Keith Jarrett, but here comes an unprecedented performance. The New Zealand guitarist Günter Helbig played 13 of Gurdjieff's piano pieces, which he arranged himself, on an electric guitar. The beautiful sound of his Gretsch White Falcon is also heard. Günter Herbig, a native of Germany, had been interested in spirituality as a teenager and was strongly influenced by Gurdjieff's writings, which have been important to him ever since.The electric guitar allows for a more fantastical sound world, and it is easier to put emotion into the music, and it can also produce microtones, which is not possible with piano, and thus exquisitely expresses the unique melisma of folk music.
