Although \"jazz is inevitably associated with the United States,\" as the liner notes of the original release point out, other countries and cultures have long brought their own unique perspectives to music. In the pre-Internet era, when international exchange of ideas, let alone international travel, was extremely limited, the album \"Laura,\" recorded by a Polish quartet of exceptional talent, is a perfect example, with seven original compositions and the Jerome Kern \u0026amp; Oscar Hammerstein II standard The work consists of seven original compositions and a new interpretation of the Jerome Kern \u0026amp; Oscar Hammerstein II standard \"Old Man River\" and is inspired by Polish folk music, especially highland folk songs. As quoted in the detailed new liner notes accompanying this release, Namislowski says, \"I wanted to make it sound different from so-called pure jazz. The sessions for Lola, recorded at Decca Studio 3 in August 1964, were supervised by Mike Vernon, who would later produce Fleetwood Mac, David Bowie, and John Mayall and found the Blue Horizon label. The engineer was Vic Smith, who would later produce for The Jam. The sessions produced the Polish group's first album recorded outside of the Iron Curtain, which received glowing reviews from the music media of the time. Reviewing the album and referring to the budding Polish jazz scene, the Jazz Journal noted. The Polish jazz scene is still in its infancy, but this album is solid evidence of its potential.
