The group features Immanuel Wilkins on alto saxophone, Jeremy Collen on piano, Kanoa Mendenhall on bass, Jeremy Dutton on drums, and special guest Gabriel Gallo on flute. The ten tracks include seven Ross originals, as well as songs by John Coltrane (\"equinox,\" \"central park west\") and Thelonious Monk (\"evidence\"). The origins of this work date back to 2020. During the covid pandemic, when live performances were shut down, Ross returned to the New School to finish his degree. In one of the classes taught by alto saxophonist Darius Jones, he urged students to delve into the history of the blues. That reminded Ross of what the blues was all about, and that it was more than just a 12-bar form. It's \"kind of a spirit, an energy,\" Ross said.It's an emotion, an expression. But I also want to stay true to the rhythmic ideas we have already developed.\" The title track \"nublues,\" released as the album's lead single, combines the spirit of the blues with the uninhibited nature of free jazz. I don't tell the band how to play,\" Ross says. What I tell them is to always stay connected and relate everything we do to each other. And whatever it is, play the blues. When asked what he hopes to convey with this LP, Ross hesitates. I don't want my personal experience to be what people are thinking when they experience it,\" he says.
