In his hymn to the Virgin Mary, *Ave Maris Stella* (originally improvised and later notated), Charles Tournemire evokes the spirit of French mysticism through sensual color and rich harmony. Maurice Duruflé’s *Prelude, Adagio, and Choral Variations* is a monumental work lasting over 20 minutes, based on the Pentecost hymn “Veni Creator Spiritus” (“Come, Creator Spirit”). Its overwhelming power, enough to shake the earth, evokes profound emotion.\n\nCharles McStone-Smith serves as organist at Buckfast Abbey. After graduating with honors from the Royal Academy of Music, he is currently studying French Baroque and Romantic organ works under Christophe Mantoux at the Church of Saint-Séverin in Paris.\nHe has served as an organ fellow at Hereford Cathedral, New College, Oxford, Westminster Abbey, the Royal Hospital Chelsea, and King’s College London.
