Lauro became the first Venezuelan to complete formal studies in classical guitar in 1938, and at the same time, he began a career as a popular musician, performing throughout South America with a vocal and guitar trio. Lauro was a political enthusiast and an ardent nationalist. In 1951, Lauro was imprisoned for his pro-democracy rhetoric, but he never stopped composing. While in prison, he wrote his masterpieces, the Sonata for Guitar, the Venezuelan Suite, and the Concerto for Guitar and Orchestra.
