Believing that the “story” behind this song cycle must first become widely known in order for its appeal to reach a broader audience—and fully aware of the difficulty of bridging Japanese and German lieder—I asked Professor Keizo Sato, who had provided a complete Japanese translation of Tieck’s *Magelone* story for the *Complete Works of the German Romantics*, to create a new narrated translation specifically for this CD. Consequently, while the first CD release featured a narration by Tsuyoshi Kato, this reissue presents the song cycle in its original form—with just vocals and piano. “This recording was made in 1992, when Heflinger visited Japan, in accordance with his own wish to take his time and record in the provinces.
