Based on Shakespeare's \"Shaku ni shaku ni shaku,\" Wagner himself wrote the libretto and composed the music for the 1834 opera \"The Love Embargo,\" a comedy in the style of Italian operas of the time. The subtitle, \"The Nuns of Palermo,\" is also Italianate, the content is truly enjoyable, and the music, while still Wagnerian in places, is generally lighthearted.Shakespeare's original play is based on a rather complex character description and an esoteric synopsis, but Wagner's work has been transformed into an easy-to-understand and enjoyable story. In addition, Holten's production replaces the stage with a kitschy style, making the story even more interesting.
