Despite this turmoil, he completed his \"Viola Concerto\" in May. It consists of a rhythmic and propulsive first movement, a serene and meditative second movement, and an anguished but highly technical third movement, and was premiered in Sao Paulo in 1989. In the same year, Santoro composed the \"Concerto for Chamber Orchestra\" commissioned by pianist Miguel Proenza, which he conducted and premiered. He also began work on Symphony No. 13, which he had long envisioned. This symphony is characterized by dramatic expression and consists of four movements that are combined to form a single story. It was never performed during Santoro's lifetime. Symphony No. 14 was commissioned for the 8th Brazilian Biennial of Contemporary Music in 1989, and was written in Baden-Baden in just two weeks. It is in three movements, with an energetic opening movement, a lyrical middle movement, and a finale that makes full use of variation techniques.Santoro died suddenly on March 27 of the same year during a concert at the National Opera House, and this work became his last symphony.
