Born in Moscow to a working-class family, Chesnokov began singing in a choir at the age of five and later studied composition with Taneyev and Ippolitov-Ivanov. He was also a highly skilled choral conductor and teacher, and taught younger students at the Moscow Conservatory, where he composed more than 500 works, including two \"All-Night Prayers. Both works were written during the imperial period before the Soviet Union's suppression of religious music, and they are pious, romantic, and grandiose in sound, as in the choral works of Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninoff.
