He was a brilliant pianist, so good that he gave the Moscow premiere of his teacher Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1 (he also gave the world premiere of No. 2). He was also a theoretician of counterpoint and a versatile composer of Orthodox chants. His style is surprisingly conservative and solidly structured, especially in the early movements of his string quartets, with a simplicity that rivals that of Mozart and Beethoven. Nevertheless, the slow movement is full of overflowing lyricism, and one can enjoy the \"Russian beauty\" of the piece. No. 7 is actually an early work, written during his stay in Paris in 1880. Its simple beauty reveals a sound movement that is not straightforward.
