He was an accomplished piano virtuoso, and his piano works are as lavish as those of Liszt. All of the pieces on this album have a connection to opera, sometimes in direct transposition, sometimes in brilliant paraphrase. It is interesting to note that when they become too brilliant, they are styled as \"exercises,\" perhaps in consideration of the difficulties they may cause when performed. The exercise based on Mozart's Serenade sounds very light and easy, but in fact it is a very difficult piece that requires five different voices, which is surprisingly difficult even for Godowsky.Siegfried's Funeral March follows the original almost exactly, but with a twist, as is typical of Busoni. It is fun to listen to it while thinking, \"What would Liszt's arrangement of this piece have sounded like if he had arranged it for solo piano?
