Completely different from the operas of the late Romantic period up to that time, this novel and innovative work, with its strictly structured script and atonal music for each scene, is regarded as one of the greatest operas of the 20th century. The message of the work has remained unchanged throughout the ages. In this Houston production, the baritone Treichel, who is also popular in Japan, sings the despair and madness of the main character Wozzeck with warmth and resonance. Marie Schwanewilms, who specializes in Wagner, is also appropriately cast.
