Furthermore, it exerted a strong influence on all subsequent British comedies—such as those by Gilbert & Sullivan—as well as on modern musicals, and remains immensely popular to this day. Now, regarding *Polly*: while the music is very elegant, the content is quite radical. Set in the West Indies, McHeath becomes a pirate, and Mrs. Treves starts a slave-trading business, tricking Polly into selling herself to the wealthy Mr. Ducat. She escapes by disguising herself as a boy and ultimately marries the son of a Caribbean chieftain. Initially, like *The Beggar’s Opera*, Papeush composed the music; however, the political satire was deemed too strong, and pressure from the prime minister of the time led to a ban on its performance, causing the work to be shelved. It wasn’t until 50 years later that Samuel Arnold (1740–1802) completely revised the score, and the opera was finally staged. If you listen to this piece without knowing its background, it might sound like an elegant Baroque opera, but the content is actually quite radical.
Naxos Japan

Tracklisting:

1.Polly: Overture (Medley of tunes from 'The Beggar's Opera')
2.Polly: Act 1.
