A Meticulous, Dramatic, and Exhilarating Performance of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7!]\nThe Southwest German Radio Symphony Orchestra (SWR Symphony Orchestra) was founded in 2016 through the merger of the Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra and the SWR Symphony Orchestra of Baden-Baden and Freiburg. As of the 2025–26 season, the orchestra comprises 131 musicians and continues its vibrant activities—ranging from classical to experimental contemporary music—primarily in the state of Baden-Württemberg, with Stuttgart as its capital. Theodor Currentzis served as principal conductor from the 2018–19 season through the 2024–25 season; however, because his tenure was conditional on not releasing commercial recordings, the orchestra’s presence on CD and DVD had been limited. This album is being released to quench that thirst. It marks the first collaboration with François-Xavier Roth, who will assume the role of principal conductor beginning with the 2025 season.\nWatching footage of the concert, the string section consists of 12 players, arranged from left to right as first violins, cello, viola, and second violins in a face-to-face configuration, with the double basses at the back of the stage. Vibrato is used sparingly; the woodwinds play on modern instruments, while the horns and trumpets use period instruments, and the timpani are played with period-style mallets. Roth’s musical approach maintains transparency while clearly bringing out the individual character of each instrumental group, vividly highlighting the structure of the piece and the impactful sound that Beethoven likely intended. As can be heard in the transition from the introduction to the main section of the first movement, meticulous attention is paid to dynamics, phrasing, and articulation, resulting in a rich variety of expression. The total performance time is 40 minutes, and true to Roto’s style, there are no moments in the fourth movement where the performance gets carried away by momentum. The post-performance applause has been edited out.\nLoth served as chief conductor of the Baden-Baden\/Freiburg SWR Symphony Orchestra—one of the predecessors of the Southwest German Radio Symphony Orchestra—from 2011 to 2016, during which time he released outstanding recordings, including the complete symphonic poems of Richard Strauss.
