After likely honing his skills in Italy and elsewhere, he moved to the Alpine town of Kempten in 1740. There, he served as assistant Kapellmeister and later Kapellmeister at the court of Abbot Anselm Reichlin von Merdeck. He built his reputation, publishing his \"12 Symphonies\" in Paris in 1744. He then moved to Mannheim in 1747, where he excelled as a composer, string player, and bass singer within the renowned Mannheim Orchestra. Composing over 70 symphonies from his youth through his later years, he made significant contributions to the development of the symphony genre in music history.\n\nRichter's symphonies, praised even during his lifetime for their originality and innovation, encompass works that can be considered experimental, incorporating various creative approaches, partly due to the genre's nascent stage at the time. The Symphony in B-flat major recorded on this CD is believed to have been composed between 1744 and 1752, during the transitional period from Kempten to Mannheim. Its third movement features a unique structure where the orchestra is divided into two groups, each assigned a different time signature, reminiscent of the Venetian contrappunto. Consequently, this movement is named \"La Confusione\" (The Confusion). The \"Sinfonia con Fuga in G minor\" (Symphony with Fugue), composed around 1760, is a symphony embodying the pinnacle of Richter's fugue studies. It possesses a solemn atmosphere reminiscent of sacred music, incorporating polyphonic elements from the Renaissance and Baroque eras. The \"Symphony in D minor,\" Op. 3-4, was composed during his Mannheim period and first published by Vénier in Paris in 1760. It is a varied work beginning with a powerful Allegro con spirito, possessing an intensity reminiscent of the Sturm und Drang period. The Symphony in G major, Op. 4-6 (BoeR 25) is also believed to have been composed during the Mannheim period and was published in Amsterdam in 1764.The first movement begins with a Mannheim-style fortissimo, followed by a slow second movement reminiscent of an opera's recitative and aria. It concludes with a lively third movement featuring a distinctive horn motif and a fugue.
