The Viennese composer Ernest Kernitz was born into a wealthy family and was encouraged by his mother to study music from an early age, studying under Franz Schreker. In 1922, he joined the faculty of the New Vienna Conservatory, but his Jewish origins forced him to flee to exile after the rise of the Nazis. He and his wife moved to the United States, where he worked as an educator at the University of Southern California. After retiring, he devoted himself to composition, and his works were premiered by many orchestras, including the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and the San Francisco Symphony. After his death, however, he was forgotten, and only recently has he been reevaluated. The Violin Sonata is a three-movement work in the late Romantic style, characterized by rich melodies and a refined piano part. The score includes a dedication to his wife Gertel, and the expression symbols are meticulously written. The String Quartet in D major skillfully blends Viennese nostalgia with modern elements. The Sonata Californiana is energetic music, with a style that foreshadows a later era. Other works include the technical unaccompanied cello sonata and the Concertino for five players, which weaves humorous melodies into a traditional form.
