The Creation, which appears here, along with Mahler's previously released Symphony No. 6, marked Rattle's departure to a new land, and was especially important as his first concert with the chorus after his appointment. Rattle is a master of Haydn's two oratorios, and his recording of The Creation with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra & Chorus in 1990 is still considered one of the most important performances by a modern orchestra. In his last season as principal conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic, Rattle also opened the season with "The Creation," and it seems that he considers it one of his "winning pieces" to be performed at each milestone. Rattle describes the appeal of this piece as "magnificent choral writing, graceful melodies, and the highest degree of polyphonic sophistication, all firmly rooted in an optimistic view of mankind. The approach is to use period instruments for trumpet and trombone in the orchestra, but to convey the full grandeur and inclusiveness of the work without trying to attract the ear with the sharpness of its sound. The recording with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra was in English, but the German version is performed here.

The oratorio "The Creation" was composed between 1796 and 1798. It was written at the request of the showman Zalomon, and uses a libretto based on the first chapter of the Old Testament book of Genesis and Milton's Paradise Lost. The first part depicts the first and fourth days of creation, when light is born out of chaos, angels dance, and the glory of God is sung. The second part is the fifth and sixth days. First, creatures cover the earth and the sky, and then man is finally created. In the third part, the created human beings "Adam and Eve" take the leading roles in the story, and the final part is a grand chorus that praises the Creator with a magnificent chorus that makes full use of counterpoint.

Naxos Japan
