Description:
Cowie was born in Birmingham, England in 1943. He is a composer who studied with Lutoslawski in Poland, received instruction from Tippett, and also studied physics and painting at university. He is known for his love of nature and for reflecting its colors and patterns in his works, and the two works recorded here were also inspired by the natural environment surrounding water. Both works are in a single movement, and the dynamic and tense finish makes them important pieces for the 21st century orchestral repertoire. Alan Hacker, soloist in the Clarinet Concerto, is a British player who specializes in classical and contemporary music. The conductor is Howard Williams, who is recognized by the composer. This recording is a reissue of an LP originally released by Hyperion in 1986, which was described at the time as "a tour de force in orchestral works! and was highly acclaimed by The Observer and The Times at the time.
