This collection was a success as a score for playing famous pieces on the viol (hurdy-gurdy, a stringed instrument played by turning a wheel with a handle to rub the strings), which was popular among amateur musicians in Paris at the time, and was published in a collection of works by French Baroque composers (\"Beautiful Vielles,\" RIC 382).
