Gram, the project of London-born singer-songwriter Ella Smoker. She released her debut album, The Garden Dream, on Secretly Canadian. As she got older, Ella Smoker realized that her subconscious was trying to tell her "some pretty strange things". The "thoughts" would come to the 21-year-old singer-songwriter's mind in dreams or while writing lyrics in studio sessions. The words come to her before she even understands what they are. 'As soon as I start making music, my brain turns off. I can sit down and write something that sounds like crap, but a month later I look back and think, 'Oh. It all comes from a place where I didn't even realize it," she explains. In learning how to open up to herself, gglum hit it off with producer Karma Kid (Maisie Peters, Shygirl, Connie Constance), pushing past her bedroom-pop introversion and finding joy in the collaborative process.Whether it's the radio rock of "SPLAT!" or the industrial energy of "Easy Fun," Smoker changes her vocals to match the mood, creating a record that deftly balances light and shadow. I had never written a song with that vocal style before, and Karma Kid pushed me out of my comfort zone," she says of the vocals on "Easy Fun. The release of The Garden Dream will give gglum plenty of opportunities to be both comical and serious as they boldly explore new ideas and sounds. On the other hand, it will also be an opportunity to further embrace who she has always wanted to be as an artist, confidently creating a sound world that listeners can safely dive into. She says, "Rather than trying to write songs, I naturally wanted to create a musical space where I could feel myself living in it. With this album, I wanted to solidify that. I want to make music for those moments when you are looking out the window and imagining what will happen next after the movie is over.That's the sound I want," she says.
