A longtime cab driver in Washington, DC, it has been a little over a decade since he re-emerged on the international music scene, beginning with a reissue on Awesome Tapes From Africa. Melgia formed a band and began performing live again. The first show of their return was highly acclaimed and featured on the front page of the New York Times. Since then, he has performed his Ethiopian jazz all over the world, including Radio City Music Hall and the Montreal Jazz Festival. Finally, a recording documentation of the powerful DC-based trio, with Kenneth Joseph (drums) and Alemseged Kebede (bass), practicing every weekend in his basement, at Brooklyn's venerable Pioneer Works on July 1, 2016. The concert, which beautifully captures their intense live show, was recorded by the staff of Pioneer Works. Energetically and playfully, Merguia and his veteran band draw from Ethiopia's varied repertoire in a succession of harmonically and rhythmically interesting ways. Modern jazz demands constant reinvention and improvisation, and night after night they create new pieces from known modes and classic standards. The band is unstoppable in taking an old melody like "Tizita" or "Anchihoye Lene" and turning it upside down or inside out to emerge as a new, often spontaneously dissolved piece. The original M1 track, "Yegle Nesh," for example, shines brighter than ever. Mergia is a true Ethiopian national treasure, skillfully switching between keyboards, organ, accordion, melodica, and other instruments.Recorded Live at Pioneer Works on July 1, 2016Hailu Mergia - Keyboards, Accordion, Melodica, Accordion, Melodica, Melodica, Keyboards, Accordion, Melodica, Melodica, Accordion, Melodica, Melodica, Melodica, Melodica, Keyboards Accordion, Melodica, VocalsAlemseged Kebede - Bass GuitarKenneth Joseph - DrumsRecording by James Clark & Justin FryeThree-piece band "Hakubi" from Kyoto releases mini album "throw. Their straightforward words spun by Vo/Gt. Katagiri and their powerful singing voice that appeals to the audience as if they are trying to push away their weakness have gained support from listeners with an ear for music. This album "throw" is the first release in about a year since the full album "Eye". It is a mini-album that includes "Dear Sir" and "Last Train," both of which were released for distribution this year. Now that the band has been in existence for 7 years, and has been working hard and progressing together in the live scene, they have completed a work that can be said to be a return to their roots as a 3-piece band, with a message to their past selves. The initial limited edition comes with a DVD containing live footage from the "Sai wa Tossed" live performance held at Zepp Haneda on November 4, 2023.
