Herbert Blomstedt is the Honorary Conductor of the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra. A live recording of the concert both gave at the end of the 2017\/18 season is now available. The program features Mahler's masterpiece, the Ninth Symphony. Blomstedt is a Bruckner specialist, but as for Mahler, he has recorded No. 2 (1992) with the San Francisco Symphony, No. 5 (1985) and No. 4 (2001) with the NHK Symphony, and in recent performances, he performed \"Giants\" with the NHK Symphony in 2018 and No. 9 in 2010 to favorable reviews Mahler's 9th Symphony is the most popular symphony in the world. Mahler wrote Symphony No. 9 during the summer of 1909 (the clean copy was completed in the spring of 1910), and it was the last symphony he completed himself. The premiere took place one year after Mahler's death, conducted by Bruno Walter and performed by the Vienna Philharmonic. Blomstedt's performance is not the emotional music of a \"mournful cry of impending death\" often associated with this work, but a clear, fresh sound without neglecting any details, resulting in a high quality performance. Mahler said, \"Tradition is the preservation of fire, not the worship of ashes.\" This performance symbolizes the various kinds of \"fire\" in Mahler's music and presents them to us.Blomstedt and the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra have had a good relationship for nearly 40 years, since the orchestra first took the stage in 1982. The orchestra was founded in March 1946 by members of the \"Prague German Philharmonic\" who had defected to Germany after World War II and moved to Bamberg in Bavaria. The original name of the orchestra was the \"Bamberg Tonkünstlerorchester\", but three months later it was renamed the \"Bamberg Symphony Orchestra\" and has continued to operate under the same name for over 70 years since then.
