Beyond the level of technical sophistication and ensemble precision, the quartet also beautifully expresses the dark, damp beauty that is uniquely Shimanowski. Beethoven's performance, on the other hand, is refreshingly free of any power or fervor. The youthful beauty of the sound shines through. At the very least, this CD should give you a good idea that these musicians are no ordinary players.
