Pianist Ulrich Roman Murtfeldt, born in Frankfurt am Main in 1970, is the second in a fascinating album of American piano music. He studied under Veronika Jochum and Hartmut Herr, and while active as a concert pianist, he also received a biologist's certificate in 2003. Her repertoire ranges from Bach to contemporary music, and she has given many premieres. This album is the second in an anthology of American piano music. Of interest is the piano sonata by Alexander Reinagle (1756-1809), who was born in the same year as Mozart. Born in England as an Austrian, he immigrated to the U.S. in 1786 and composed 50 operas, all of which were destroyed in a fire in 1820. Four of his piano sonatas are extant, the first of which is entitled "Philadelphia. The multi-sensorial style is more reminiscent of C.P.E. Bach or Haydn than American, and the fact that such a classical work existed in America is astonishing. Also welcome is a new recording of McDowell's "Yose on the Wild Roses," once a staple of piano albums.The beautiful piano sounds are tantalizingly attractive thanks to Audite's unique recording, and each of the pieces is unique, including Antile's Jazz Sonata, which ends at 1:47, and Ives' Sonata, which is short but terribly difficult.
