It is feared for its unusual degree of difficulty, using 12 sharp tonalities not used in Liszt's work of the same name, and combining Liszt's brilliance with Balakirev's high voltage. Noack was 14 years old when he heard of the work and wrote of his surprise and anger that such a meticulously written masterpiece had been so unjustly neglected. There have been several discs of this work, but the depth of Noack's understanding of Lyapunov's music is overwhelming.
