D'Ambrosio was born in Naples. After studying in his native land, he studied with Pablo de Sarasate in Madrid in 1889-90 and with Augusto Wilhelmi in London in 1891-92. Since his death at the age of 43, only a few of his recordings have been made, and his works have been forgotten. When a great performer takes up the work of a buried composer, his enthusiasm is usually strong. Here, too, Kantorov is particularly strong in the concerto, and the fullness of the late Romanticism is well presented. Dutch conductor Arie van Beek was also enthusiastic, and his two concertos were exemplary and supreme performances. On the other hand, the small pieces played by Haruko Ueda are all wonderful pieces that bring back the joys of the old salon. This one disc should give you an overview of D'Ambrosio's work. Kantorov has done a great job in reviving a wonderful buried art form.
