Edward George Power Biggs (1906-1977) was born in Westcliff-on-Sea, Essex, England. Biggs studied at the Royal Academy of Music in London under G.D. Cunningham, emigrated to the U.S. in 1930, and in 1932 was transferred to Christ Church in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where he lived the rest of his life. Biggs was instrumental in bringing the classical pipe organ back to prominence and was at the forefront of the mid-20th century revival of organ music by pre-Romantic composers: on his first concert tour to Europe in 1954, J.S. Bach, Sweelinck, Buxtehude, Pachelbel's works were performed and recorded on historic organs associated with the composers.He believed that such music should be played on instruments representative of the period, and that organ music of the period should ideally be played using the style and registration of the period as faithfully as possible. Therefore, he promoted the construction of organs in the style of European baroque instruments, especially as seen in the growing popularity of organs with trackers (boards that interlock with keys, pipes, etc., stretched diagonally across the organ's interior above) due to the European organ reform movement, and in the United States This was a major driving force behind the resurgence in popularity of the organ in the United States. Virgil Fox, a noted American organist of the time (who recorded for RCA on the Leyval label), criticized Biggs' claims of historical accuracy, claiming that he was \"relegating the organ to a museum piece,\" but many reviewers have commented that \"the innovative ideas in the music Biggs recorded and the way he recorded the Biggs deserves great credit for the innovative ideas in the music he recorded and for making the organ even more famous.(1\/2) Sony Music\u003c\/p\u003e","brand":"Sony Classical","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":47833399394593,"sku":"196588267727","price":38.95,"currency_code":"EUR","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0568\/8482\/2076\/files\/196588267727.jpg?v=1705287691","url":"https:\/\/cdsvinyljapan.com\/it-it\/products\/196588267727","provider":"CDs Vinyl Japan Store","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
