Shostakovich with Gergiev\/Mariinsky! The latest album by Jan Vogler, one of Germany's most mature cellists, features two cello concertos recorded at the Dresden Festival, where he has been an Intendant since 2018. The first of these is the world premiere recording of the cello concerto \"Three Continents,\" composed and co-produced by Nico Marley (1981-), Sven Helbig (1968-), and Zhou Long (1953-), who composed one movement each. The work, which as the title suggests refers to three different continents (the United States, Germany, and China), is a topical work that incorporates the diverse personalities of three composers from three different generations into one, each movement written in a completely different style and writing style. The first movement, which Nico Marley was in charge of, is characterized by its colorful sound using a huge orchestra, but it is interesting that the cello is part of the overall texture of the concerto, as if it were a Baroque concerto, rather than spotlighting the soloist, even though it is a cello concerto. This is an interesting point. The second movement, by Sven Helbig, is a slow movement titled \"Aria\" and highlights the cello's qualities as a \"beautifully singing instrument. The lively final movement by Zhou Long is titled \"The Tipsy Poet,\" and is full of colorful exoticism reminiscent of the Chinese instrument. The contrasts and comparisons of different musical language styles that euphemistically or directly evoke different countries or continents in this single piece make for an extremely interesting musical experience. This recording was made when the piece premiered at the 2019 Dresden Festival. The coupling is Shostakovich's Cello Concerto No. 2. Recorded with the Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra conducted by Valery Gergiev, \"Jan Vogler sings happiness and passion on the cello. \"Jan Vogler sings of happiness and passion on the cello, and he does so with a brilliantly perfect technique. He is at one with the music, intoxicated by it, as if growing up with it\" (rbb Kulturradio).
