Description:

100th anniversary of Bernstein's birth. The entirety of the legendary Norton Lectures at Harvard University, previously unreleased in Japan, is now available on CD for the first time! You can fully enjoy Bernstein's eloquent narration. In commemoration of the 100th anniversary of Leonard Bernstein's birth, a box set of three titles will be released on August 17. This is a spectacular way to celebrate the anniversary of this greatest musician of the 20th century. This 13-CD box set contains the entirety of the six Chalz Elliott Norton Lectures on Poetics that Bernstein gave at his alma mater, Harvard University, in 1973, and was released in November 1974 as a box of six sets and 14 LPs by then-CBS. In addition to Bernstein's lectures, which include partial piano performances, the box also contains Columbia session recordings of the works discussed in the individual lectures, which created quite a stir at the time. The lecture itself has been preserved on video (recently released on DVD), and a large part of the book "Questions Without Answers," which was derived from the lecture, has been translated into Japanese, but the audio recording itself was never released as a domestic edition. This time, in Bernstein's anniversary year, the entire recording is finally available on CD, allowing the listener to fully enjoy Bernstein's eloquent narration. In 1971, Bernstein was invited to teach the Norton Lectures at his alma mater, Harvard University (a tradition that has attracted the likes of Striebinsky and Copland in the past), requiring him to spend a semester at the university and give six lectures. Bernstein took time out of his busy concert and composition schedule to spend the fall of 1972 at Harvard University, where he was named "Man of the Year" by the university's student newspaper. The six lectures themselves were held in the fall of 1973, and Bernstein mobilized all of his knowledge to lecture on the universality of music. Drawing on the theories of Noam Chomsky, the first three lectures analyzed the music of Classicism in terms of sound, structure, and meaning, while the fourth lecture focused on Romantic music in terms of ambiguous harmony and free structure. The fifth lecture discussed the movement toward atonalism and the crisis of musical language it created, and the final and extensive sixth lecture focused on the works of Stravinsky, concluding by finding the "answer" to the "unanswered question" in placing tonality at the center The lecture was a wide-ranging one.Bernstein's approach to analyzing and talking about music has been most clearly demonstrated in his various television programs, including "Young People's Concerts," and this recording of the "Norton Lectures" is the culmination of one of Bernstein's activities. As an important record that complements the approximately 200 CDs of Bernstein's performances that he left for Sony Classical, the release of the complete "Norton Lectures" on CD in this anniversary year is a significant milestone in the story of this giant of Bernstein's career.
