A true winner in Beethoven's Memorial Year! Rare recordings by nine historic conductors: Kleiber, Bernstein, Jansons, Blomstedt, Arnoncourt-Zinman, Norrington, Herreweghe, and Dorati! A true masterpiece in the 250th anniversary year of Beethoven's birth! The Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra is releasing a complete symphony collection of historic Beethoven performances from live broadcast recordings made between 1978 and 2008. The Arnoncourt No. 3 and Mariss Jansons No. 5 were previously included in the RCO's Anthology Box, but the other recordings are being released for the first time. Carlos Kleiber's No. 7 has been released as a video product, but this is the first time it has been released on CD. The first is by David Zinman (2010). Zinman's Beethoven is best remembered for his groundbreaking 1997 \u0026amp; 1998 cycle with the Tonhalle Orchestra, but this performance with the Concertgebouw is a completely different take on the music. The confident melody of the first movement, the graceful second movement, the lighthearted third movement, and the richly conceived fourth movement foreshadow Beethoven's later works. Zinman's clarity and clarity in every detail of the young Beethoven's ambition and the full beauty of the orchestra's sound coexist in the midst of it, and I was deeply impressed by the high level of performance. The second piece was performed by Leonard Bernstein (1978). Bernstein made his debut with the Concertgebouw in 1950, and they had a close relationship over the years, including a European tour in 1987. Bernstein performed with the Concertgebouw in 1978 with two Beethoven programs. The first was their famous \"Missa Solemnis,\" which they both performed on an overwhelming scale. The other is the Symphony No. 2. The Second Symphony was written at the same time as the famous \"Heiligenstadt Testament,\" which was written by Beethoven in despair due to his hearing loss. However, there is no sense of anguish or despair in the work, and it shows a further expansion of expression from No. 1 and an evolution from the traditional compositional approach. Bernstein's performance is full of life, reflecting such brilliant music of Beethoven.No. 3 was Nicolaus Arnoncourt (1988), who also held the post of honorary guest conductor for many years. The refreshing period approach and the lively, vibrant music of Arnoncourt in his mature years are superb.
