The first members were Rostislav Dubinsky (violin), Vladimir Rabay (violin), Rudolf Barshai (viola), and Valentin Berlinsky (cello). The group is still active today, although the members have changed. After 62 years as the first member of the quartet, cellist Valentin Berlinsky retired in the summer of 2007, passing the baton to Vladimir Balshin. Trained at the Moscow Conservatory, they embody the entire musical culture in their philosophy and aesthetics with a cohesive identity, maintaining and further transforming their unique tradition in the interpretation of Russian chamber music. Shostakovich was a close friend of the first members of the Borodin String Quartet and consulted with them on many aspects of his compositions. His chamber works are the centerpiece of this box of recordings made between 1990 and 1995 for the former Virgin Classics and Teldec, and although the lineup has inevitably changed over the years, the connection has endured, and Shostakovich's performances are still unrivaled. The Shostakovich performance is still unrivaled, and many of the other Russian works are also unparalleled masterpieces.
