Description:
American Impressionism as portrayed by the master pianist Olson. The artistry of Charles Tomlinson Griffiths. Garrick Olson’s new recording features Griffiths! ■Garrick Olson, the renowned American pianist who won the 8th International Chopin Piano Competition in 1970. Following his recordings of Brahms’ “Variations” (CDA67777) and and Granados’ “Goyescas” (CDA67846), this third new recording features a collection of piano works by the tragically short-lived American composer Charles Tomlinson Griffiths (1884–1920)! ■While studying abroad in Berlin, Griffs studied composition under Humperdinck and was also influenced by the music of Debussy and Scriabin. These are the piano works of Griggs, a leading figure of American Impressionism, who composed masterpieces such as “The White Peacock” (included in “Four Roman Sketches”) and the “Piano Sonata,” yet passed away suddenly from illness in 1920. The crisp and brilliant piano playing of fellow American virtuoso Olson brings out the true value of these works. Tokyo M-Plus
