Gergiev's "Elektra"! An intense performance by the LSO! Charbonnet, Denoke, and Palmer's uncanny passionate singing! Gergiev is well known for his passion for performing Strauss's works on stage. Gergiev's "Elektra" is now available on LSO Live, a live recording of a concert-style performance he gave at the Barbican in January 2010 under the direction of the LSO. Three years after the success of his previous opera, "Salome," Strauss has written "Elektra" from a libretto by Hoffmanstahl, a Greek tragedy reimagined, and it is once again an opera famous for its gory, gruesome content and even more intense music.The huge orchestral scale, which surpasses that of Wagner's "Ring," is used to great effect to enhance the plot of "the revenge of the sisters against their mother and her lover, who murdered their father after an adulterous affair. The orchestral accompaniment is extremely effective in enhancing the plot of the opera. Among Strauss's many operas, "Elektra," with its omnipresent themes of death, violence, sexual repression, and revenge, can be easily imagined to be a good match for Gergiev's dramatic style. Gergiev's extraordinary commitment to "Elektra" can be seen in the splendid cast. Jeanne-Michelle Charbonnet, an American dramatic soprano who has been pursuing the role of Elektra since her performance as the fourth servant in Spoleto opened her eyes to the charm of the work, has been making her mark in German and modern repertoire in recent years.The three main female roles are very strong, with Angela Denoke, who made a strong impression in "Salome" in Baden-Baden in 2011, as the younger sister Crisothemis, and Felicity Palmer, a veteran of the 2005 Bishkov disc, as the mother Clytemnestra. Matthias Goerne, who is known for his psychological portrayal, joins them as the younger brother Orestes, and in addition to the leading roles, members of the Mariinsky Opera Company have been invited to play the supporting roles, so the company is well-prepared. In Gergiev's "Elektra," the LSO, in top form, brought out a profound and varied sound, and the attention paid to the singers, who sang with great power and competed with the orchestra with aplomb, was also excellent, again demonstrating the rich career he has cultivated in opera over the years.
