In 1869, he succeeded Balakirev as the permanent conductor of the Russian Musical Society and at the same time became the principal conductor of the Mariinsky Theater. Today, he is best known for his revision of Tchaikovsky's \"Pathetique,\" but the chamber works heard here have an Italianate sound with rich melodies reminiscent of Verdi. The Spiros Trio performing is an up-and-coming group that won the 2015 ECHO Klassik Award.
