The name comes from the name given to Bizhikiins Jennings by Eddie Benton-Banai (Ojibwe for teacher), one of the founders of the American Indian Movement. Unbound was completed over a period of years between several projects of the Bizhiki members, including two solo album releases.Rainey's Niineta and Carey's Break Me Open were both released in 2022, and they were busy touring their respective projects.
