The Complete Consort Music of John Amner! A new album by Fretwork, the world's premier viol consort founded in 1986 by Asako Morikawa, Richard Boothby, and other viola da gamba players, is now available from Rubicon in the UK. John Amner (1579-1641) was an English musician who was born and died in Ely, a small town in England known for its magnificent Ely Cathedral. He spent most of his life in Ely, except for a period when he studied at Oxford University, and had a particularly close relationship with Ely Cathedral, first as a boy choir member in his childhood, and later as choir director, organist, and priest. This recording contains all of John Amner's limited surviving consort music, which is rarely recorded even today, and will be a valuable contemporary record of the local religious music scene in England during the first half of the 17th century.
