The Butter Quartet, performed by the Butter Quartet, an ancient music group formed in 2017 by four students enrolled at The Hague Conservatory of Music, offers a vivid and breathtaking period performance. The commentary in the booklet (in English) is written by members of the Quartet, led by Anna Jane Lester on violin. The binding is in digipak format, and Anna Jane Lester also participated in the design. A group of period performance experts The members of the Butter Quartet all have master's degrees and are very knowledgeable about historical techniques. The Quartet is also dedicated to introducing unknown works, and they are very particular about the bows they use, comparing "classical bows" and "baroque bows". Early Italian String Quartets The Italian musicians Giardini [1716-1796], Pugnani [1731-1798], and Silmen [1745-1818], who were active in Europe at about the same time as Haydn [1732-1809], were famous as violinists and Boccherini [1743-1805] as a cellist. Boccherini [1743-1805] was famous as a cello virtuoso, but each was also gifted as a composer and left behind some fascinating string quartets. The Merits and Demerits of the "basso continuo The 18th century in Europe was a time when the Enlightenment led to the rise of a civic class, and the changing social structure had a great impact on the music industry. The "bass continuo," which had been used to accompany chords in ensembles of all sizes, was mainly played by professional musicians in court orchestras, court theaters, and churches, and abbreviated notation was the norm. However, such abbreviated notation was not accepted by many performers in civil society, leading composers to switch to a compositional method in which all notes were notated. Birth of the "string quartet In contrast to the declining "basso continuo," works for "string quartet," in which all the notes are notated, were increasingly performed and published as the demand for performance increased in civil society and aristocratic orchestras became smaller. Sparks of the Enlightenment and the brilliance of the Gallant style The Italian composers on this album, Giardini, Pugnani, Boccherini, and Silmen, lived at the turning point of these times, working in many areas as virtuoso performers, but also composing music that adapted to the situation. They also wrote music for "string quartets," which were at the forefront of their time, and sometimes wrote works rich in ideas reminiscent of the Gallant style. "Scintilla" (Spark) The album title "Scintilla" is an Italian word meaning "spark," and is thought to refer to the rise of the civic class, which was prompted by Enlightenment ideas that led to the creation of the string quartet.
