Born in Budapest, he spent his youth studying in Leipzig, Geneva, and Paris, acquiring a taste for European musical culture, but he remained in Hungary until the outbreak of World War II to study Hungarian folk music, contributing to the development of music in the region. He wrote nine symphonies during his lifetime, all of them in a fascinating style. The Third Symphony, composed in 1947-48 during a temporary visit to London, uses material from the soundtrack of the film \"Murder in the Cathedral,\" which he composed around the same time. Symphony No. 4 is a work in the Hungarian musical idiom, and the lively, bright melody of the final movement gives it its title, \"Spring. The \"Second Suite\" was originally intended to be a ballet set in mythical Athens, but in the end the choreography was left unchoreographed and only the music remained. It is a lively and descriptive work.
