Although it is labeled as Symphony No. 1, it is actually the second symphony; the actual First Symphony, written in 1938, was removed from the catalog by Bacevich himself. It, too, was never authorized for publication, and this performance is based on the autograph score. The Polish Overture was written in 1954. This piece, too, was never published, but its lively rhythms with complex modulations create an excellent effect. Other pieces on the program include the neoclassical \"Partita,\" composed in 1955, and \"In una parte,\" written in 1967, two years before his death. The WDR Symphony Orchestra Cologne, conducted by Ukas Borovich, gives a superb performance of the early experimental works as well as the later works with a wide variety of timbres.
